My luckiest coin toss
Macau circa 1984: My mom was pregnant with me when she was 21. As cliché as it sounds, I was an unwanted pregnancy, an accident, and a mistake. My father did not want the baby for obvious reasons: they were unmarried, too young, and not financially ready. And he was even more convinced that my mother should have an abortion after seeing the ultrasound - he did not want his first born to be a girl.
My parents had endless arguments over the situation. Exasperated by all the fighting, my father offered a simple solution: they should just flip a coin to decide my fate.
I guess I got lucky.

wow. I hate to say it but that's one of those disturbing things I think kids would be better off not knowing. glad it turned out well though.
it would have been a tragedy if the outcome was to your dad's call...for you and for them.
fate. that's what they left it to. =)
lucky yes indeedy.
that's so sad :O If I were your mom, I'd feel so guilty everytime it was your birthday =[
Oh my goodness! I'm glad you won, friend.
I was in an extremely similar situation, except my mom was 18 (19 when she gave birth to me).
she wanted an abortion and I don't know what happened but here I am today.

Chalk this up as another reason why abortion makes me queasy. If it is tragic for your life to end today, wouldn't it be all the more tragic if your life had ended then before you had a chance to live?
Recently, the eighteen month old daugther (pictured several posts back on my site) of a good friend of mine died very unexpectedly. Saniyah's death had a very profound effect on me because she was a child. When an old person die you more for what was past, when a child dies you mourn for what was anticipated and hoped for. Interestingly, Saniyah was a prime candidate for abortion, her mom was single, poor and unemployed. But her mom (an extraordinary woman) wouldn't even consider adoption, she would raise Saniyah if it meant sacrificing everything and I strongly believe she made the right choice. Saniyah, her life tragically short, still was a little angel of hope in my life and will be missed.
On an aside, the blending of abortion, the Chinese one child policy and cultural desire for a male heir has many unintended consequences. I feel bad for any male living in China, it is hard enough finding a mate in a population that has equal numbers, I couldn't imagine being in a country where there are millions more men than women...yikes! The irony is that all this work to preserve the family name is in vain if the guy can't find a spouse. This is why social engineering sucks.
Anyhow, being that you were a 50-50 chance from your life being aborted...how do you feel about abortion?
Wow. I'm glad the coin landed the way it did
wow...no offense to ur folks..but what a heartless way to decide on your child's life. i'm glad the coin landed right.
